History of FABC

History of Forest Avenue Baptist Church

On Sunday afternoon, July 11, 1943, a group met with a desire to start an independent, missionary-minded church in the Willow Run area of Ypsilanti, Michigan. At this first meeting, the congregation decided to call the Rev. R.C. Nicols as the first pastor. The new church was named the Baptist Tabernacle on August 11, 1943, and the first Constitution was adopted on August 27, 1943.

The name was changed to Forest Avenue Baptist on May 21, 1947, along with some other major changes. The original wood frame building was brought from the Willow Run Village location to the current location on East Forest Avenue. This same structure is what is attached to the rear of the current facility. It has been remodeled into a game room and craft area for children and youth ministries. The main auditorium was dedicated in October, 1952, and the main Education unit on April 16, 1961, under the ministry of Pastor Engel. Modifications and balcony were made along the way. The drive-up handicap accessible entrance, foyer, and elevator unit was dedicated on August 29, 1993 at a special 50th Anniversary Weekend Celebration of FABC! The new millennium began with installation of a new baptistry, windows, and other improvements. We thank God for the facilities He has graciously provided, and we continue to submit their use to Him for His purposes and for His glory!

FABC has had eight Senior Pastors: Rev. R.C. Nicols, Rev. Harold Engel, Dr. James Bedford, Rev. Jerry Davis, Rev. Ralph Crotty, Pastor Robert Barnett, Rev. Raymond Keith Worrell. Rev. Ronald G. Clark serves as the current senior pastor. Each one has had his unique influence on the Church.

Missionary support has been a continuing emphasis--reflected in the special “Harvest of Blessings” emphasis in October. Many have come to salvation in Jesus Christ, many have continued serving our great God and Savior, and, among them, the Lord has called a number to go into ministries in churches and missions around the world.

Pastor Ron Clark began ministry at FABC in February 2005. His ministry features Bible exposition in teaching and preaching, explaining the meaning of God’s Word with application to life today. In addition to overseeing church ministries and functions, he serves in Biblical counseling, seminars, and other ministries.

FABC is in a process of renewal and rebuilding. We are seeking the Lord’s Will and Way for His work here at FABC. Consider joining us as the Lord unfolds the next stage in the history of FABC!
